Argentina sack manager Edgardo Bauza

AFA president Claudio Tapia has announced that Edgardo Bauza is no longer the head coach of the Argentina national team.

They lie in fifth place in the South American qualifying group, with four games left.

Only the top-4 automatically qualify through to Russian Federation next summer while the team that finishes in 5th spot faces a country from the Oceanian section.

Argentina have four World Cup qualifiers left and will be without their star player Lionel Messi after Federation Internationale de Football Association handed the Barcelona ace a four-match ban for abusing linesman Marcelo Van Gasse in Argentina's 1-0 win over Chile on 23 March.

The fan favorite is Sevilla manager and Argentine Jorge Sampaoli, who led Chile to the 2015 Copa America. They recorded two wins from two matches with Messi but only one win in four without him.

Edgardo Bauza's reign as Argentina coach has ended after just eight months at the helm, with the Argentinian FA making the announcement on Monday.

Messi missed all but the Brazil and Colombia matches through injury.

Argentina just beat Chile 1-0 in qualifying last month before falling 2-0 at Bolivia days later.

Bauza persuaded Messi to return in August and the captain responded with a goal in a 1-0 home win over Uruguay on September 1.

Argentina's next qualifier will be against Uruguay in Montevideo, with home matches against Venezuela and Peru followed by a tricky trip to Ecuador.

It's been 47 years since Argentina last failed to qualify for a World Cup.

The official announcement was delayed while the federation worked out financial details with Bauza, whose contract had been set to run until 2018 if Argentina qualifies for the World Cup.
