Trump removes Bannon from National Security Council
Apr 07, 2017, 01:57
President Trump has signed an executive order removing his chief political strategist, Steve Bannon, from a key national security post.
Bannon, who remains President Donald Trump's chief adviser, was placed by Trump on both the NSC and its Principals Committee, while the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the director of national intelligence were listed as only occasional participants.
The memo also restores the director of national intelligence, Dan Coats, and the Joint Chiefs chairman, Marine Corps Gen. Joseph Dunford, to the Principals Committee.
McMaster holds a more traditional view of the US's place in the world than hyper-nationalist Bannon and former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign after misrepresenting contacts with Russia's ambassador to the US.
Now that Flynn is gone, Bannon is no longer needed in that role, the official said.
The decision to elevate Bannon on the NSC in January was criticized by some members of Congress and Washington's foreign policy establishment.
Optional members of the committee are "the Counsel to the President, the Deputy Counsel to the President for National Security Affairs, and the director of the Office of Management and Budget may attend all PC meetings".
"Susan Rice operationalized the NSC during the last administration".
In addition to Trump and Vice President Mike Pence, the regular attendees will be the secretaries of State, Treasury, Defense, Energy, Homeland Security and the Attorney General; the national and homeland security advisers; and the U.S. envoy to the United Nations, as well as the Central Intelligence Agency director, in addition to the Joint Chiefs chair and the DNI.
A new memorandum about the composition of the NSC was published in the Federal Register on Wednesday. Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert also had his role downgraded. The official said the change moves the NSC "back to its core function of what it's supposed to do".
The move was cheered by former Obama National Security Council official Ned Price.
