"My son was with a friend the other day and Beast and Belle were on the cover of a magazine and his friend was getting very excited, there we were, and my son just went, "Yeah that's just my dad in a suit".

But don't be surprised if after the credits roll and the fairy dusts lift that you still consider the animated movie to be the "real" version of this story.

Also, some plot points that made more sense in animated form are a little jarring when rendered in live action. Today, they introduce their first openly gay character in the remake of Beauty and the Beast. The animation of the castle's enchanted staff which include Lumiere (Ewan McGregor), Cogsworth (Ian Mckellen), Mrs Potts (Emma Thompson) along with the 3D effects is of fine quality.

There might have been some sniffiness over La La Land's musical credentials but Disney are the modern masters of the musical format and there's no harm done here with the retreads of Alan Menken's music and songs with Tim Rice lyrics.

The film gets a B and is rated PG.

She had to turn down the lead in La La Land for this: the movie equivalent of the Two Buses scenario. "No denying she's a amusing girl that Belle".

The plot remains basically the same. Belle is a loner in a crowd, a reject of her illiterate village on account of her love for literature.

Maurice, her father played by Kevin Kline, gets lost in the woods and winds up a prisoner in the Beast's castle.

Before production began, Emma Watson worked closely with Bill Condon and Dan Stevens to polish the script, adding what she calls "detail and depth and fullness and wholeness to the scenes". Here, she plays the bewildered ingénue with naïve grace and bold determination.

Opposite her as The Beast, Downton Abbey Dan Stevens sounds like a demonically possessed Hugh Laurie, a growly Dr House.

In the end, it all comes down to a brutal battle between Gaston and the Beast for Belle's hand. "It means "Beauty and the Beast" smacked the record opening of a 'Harry Potter" film, that is his last chapter 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2'".
