Apple is Completely Rethinking the Mac Pro and Pro Display

"I think we designed ourselves into a bit of a thermal corner, if you will, ' Mr Federighi said, adding that the Mac Pro's set-up then became 'fairly hard to adjust". Apple typically doesn't reveal anything about its future plans but with the Mac Pro not having seen an update in over 1,200 days, professional users had reached new levels of anxiety over the uncertain future of pro devices at Apple.

In that meeting, Apple's SVP of marketing Phil Schiller and SVP of software engineering Craig Federighi revealed just enough details on their upcoming Mac Pro to whet the appetites of users who have been waiting for something new, especially a new GPU that'll help the computer push out better graphics and an Apple-made display to replace the Cinema Display that died a year ago.

The company updated its MacBook Pro laptops late last year, but desktop Macs have languished with outdated specs sometimes for years. -- "We designed ourselves into a bit of a corner", Craig Federighi, Apple SVP of Software Engineering said of the current Mac Pro's cylindrical chassis.

The company acknowledged during the meeting that the iMac is increasingly being used by pro users - likely some combination of the all-in-one's increased capabilities and the fact that the Mac Pro hasn't received a fundamental upgrade in more than three years. They're also working on Apple-branded pro displays to go with them.

The good news is that Apple are working on a new Mac Pro that will be expandable and modular, with particular reference to the GPU.

"You won't see any of these products this year", Apple's marketing director Phil Schiller told Axios. New versions with more computing power will become available later today, and a fully redesigned model and accompanying Apple displays will follow, albeit not anytime this year. According to Mashable, the starting $2,999 model will now feature a six-core Xeon processor (up from four) and dual Fire Pro D500 graphics cards, up from the D300s in older models. The $4,000 model will have eight cores and dual D800 CPUs.

The "pre-announcement" of a future Mac Pro overhaul isn't exactly consistent with Apple's usual way of revealing product plans. "We want to be as transparent as we can... and help them as they make their buying decisions".

The current edition of the Mac Pro was introduced in 2013. Apple says it's nearing a $25 billion run rate on the Mac, making it near ready to be a Fortune 100 company on its own. Because of this, the internal cooling of the Mac Pro does not work well in this arrangement and long story short, they have to scrap the design. Apple will attempt to sweeten the deal in the short term by upgrading the configurations to offer greater performance-per-dollar.
