Trump OKs Keystone pipeline, calling it 'great day' for jobs

The U.S. State Department has approved TransCanada's presidential permit for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which was blocked by the administration of former President Barack Obama.

Shannon Jr. issued a presidential permit that authorizes project owner TransCanada "to construct, connect, operate, and maintain pipeline facilities at the U.S".

"Another reason why it's important to Saskatchewan, even though it will not be Saskatchewan oil in the pipeline, anytime we get Canadian oil to tidewater, in this case the Gulf, we lower the differential - the discount at which we have been selling our oil forever", said Wall.

The consent for the pipeline should come from the Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, but Tillerson said he had been far from the discussions because of his previous functions as head of the oil company ExxonMobil, with investments in the bituminous sands from where the oil would come.

Bouchard says the project also faces competition from other proposed pipelines as oilsands growth slows.

President Donald Trump announced the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline in the Oval Office on Friday, surrounded by his cabinent, senior aides and president of TransCanada Russ Girling.

The State Department is set to approve the Keystone XL pipeline by Monday, March 27, 2017, a senior USA official said, reversing the Obama administration's decision to block the controversial oil pipeline.

Keystone XL would carry up to 35 million gallons of oil every day from Canada's tar sands - one of the dirtiest, most carbon-intensive energy sources in the world - to refineries in Texas. Today's decision is a win-win for the world's most integrated energy partnership, the US and Canada.

The Keystone Pipeline approval is here.

"The Nebraska Public Service Commission still needs to approve the project while individual landowners refusal may also delay the process", he said.

Keystone XL's route is the same in 2013, when TransCanada last applied for a permit for the pipeline which was ultimately rejected.

He expressed his excitement over the line as it will create thousands of jobs.

"It's a great day for American jobs and a historic moment for North America and energy independence", Trump said at the White House.

"Keystone was stopped once before, and it will be stopped again", vowed Annie Leonard, the group's USA director.

In the long run the pipeline will have a positive ripple effect for oil production.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer tweeted that President Trump would discuss the pipeline later on Friday morning.
