Islanders captain Tavares to miss final week of season

Anders Lee and the New York Islanders refused to pack in their late-season playoff push minus captain John Tavares. The puck bounced into the high slot, where Lee snapped a shot, beating Lehner under the left arm. "For the most part, we did that tonight and did our best to grind it out". Weight provided the update before New York's game at Buffalo on Sunday.

Lehner inadvertently began the play by casually swatting a shot directed at the Buffalo goal.

Tavares left in the third period, however the Islanders were able to hang on for a 2-1 win. Lee quickly shuffled the puck to his backhand and put it through Kincaid's legs at 5:44 for his 29th of the season.

Kane scored his team-leading 27th goal to tie the game for Buffalo midway through the second.

The Sabres dropped to 6-11-2 in their past 19 in a late-season collapse that has led to Buffalo extending its playoff drought to a sixth consecutive season.

The Islanders regained the lead less than a minute later when Ho-Sang got the puck off of a Jack Eichel turnover and beat Lehner on a breakaway.

Lee has been on an extensive roll in having scored 30 times in his past 59 games. While Staple notes that a call-up has yet to be made, there's absolutely no outright replacement for an elite center like Tavares, who might end up finishing with 66 points (28 goals, 38 assists) and 18 power-play points over 77 games.

NY defensive Dennis Seidenberg forced Jack Eichel to commit a turnover along the left boards of the Islanders zone, and sprung Ho-Sang on a breakaway. That's it. He's got to make a decision. Islanders C Connor Jones made his National Hockey League debut a day after being called up from AHL Bridgeport. Sabres RW Kyle Okposo (illness) missed his second straight game and will also be out Monday against Toronto.
