ICC to bid for cricket in 2024 Olympics

"The diverse group of 117 leaders and innovators are drawn from the sports, entertainment, media, technology, higher education, business, philanthropic and public sectors in California and around the world, helping LA 2024 develop a Games plan that will serve the Olympic Movement in 2024 and beyond", the LA 2024 board said in a statement.

If approved the game will make a return to the mega event after 124 years after the only appearance coming in 1900 in Paris.

Even though the 2024 Olympics will either be held in Los Angeles or Paris, both of which are not cities known for cricket, Richardson feels that it could present the ICC with an opportunity to expand the reach of the sport to even more countries across the globe. Baseball and softball are set to return in Tokyo in 2020.

"We need to make a decision by July this year so we can make an application in time for September, when, as I understand it, the International Olympic Committee will consider new sports for 2024", Cricbuzz quoted Richardson as saying. In fact both would be opportunistic, especially the United States option, and even Paris wouldn't be impossible'.

"In Europe, too, it would be good although we would have to spend a bit more on cricket pitches in France than the U.S. but it's not impossible".

Richardson said any approach would be for cricket's shortest Twenty20 format.

"I think the majority of the..."

"I think we have come to the conclusion the overall benefit to globalise it and grow the game will outweigh any negatives".

Dave Richardson, former South Africa wicket keeper and General Manager of the International Cricket Council, gestures during a news conference in New Delhi May 31, 2006.

The question of cricket's inclusion at the Olympics has always been fraught with difficulties but, speaking at the SportPro conference in London, Richardson reportedly gave his backing to the move, which would likely take the form of a T20 tournament featuring six to eight teams.

The IOC had already made clear that there were limitations on athlete numbers, which would mean a competition of six to eight national sides at elite level.

Cricket's governing body will decide this summer whether to apply for the sport to become part of the Olympics.

He suggested England would be relaxed about playing along with other home nations as Great Britain. In the northern hemisphere, the Olympics are held in the English summer, so that's a problem if there's an Ashes series on.

'From an ICC perspective, that's the most challenging part of it, ' he said.
