Xi-Trump meeting to set course of bilateral ties: China

China expert Scott Kennedy of the Center for Strategic and International Studies speculated Abe's visit may be a reason the U.S.is also hosting Xi at Mar-a-Lago.

The meeting will take place at Trump's resort, Mar-a-Lago, Lu told reporters at a regular press briefing.

"American companies must be prepared to look at other alternatives".

Trump didn't elaborate. He's following those words up by signing two executive orders Friday aimed at combating foreign trade practices that the White House says are abusive.

Hours after the official announcement that he will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping for the first time next week, President Donald Trump took to Twitter to reassure his supporters he would be standing up for their interests.

Rather than putting up big barriers to US markets, as Trump threatened to do on the campaign trail, American companies operating in China would prefer the president to pressure the Chinese government to make its huge economy more open. China is North Korea's most important source of diplomatic support and economic assistance.

The dollar has strengthened against major global currencies over the past few sessions, with an index tracking the USA currency against a basket of major rivals climbing for the fourth straight session to 100.59.

As the world's first and second largest economies, the two countries have great potential to expand trade and economic cooperation, and could properly manage trade friction in line with the principle of mutual benefits and seeking win-win outcome, he said.

It marks the pair's first meeting and comes amid heightened tensions between the US and China on issues such as trade, Taiwan and North Korea's nuclear program.

The message to China was clear: If Trump is willing to do this to his closest allies, consider how tough he'll be on China.

For Trump, both as candidate and as president-elect, China was a punching bag, and central to his "America First" message to his constituents, framed by him as the victims of the globalisation model that propelled China's rise.

Trump also incensed Beijing in December by taking a phone call from Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and later saying the United States did not have to stick to the so-called "one China" policy.

Mr Trump previously slammed China for its perceived lack of diplomacy in dealing with North Korea.

He also endorsed the "One China" policy on Taiwan, which has governed the fragile relations between the US, China and Taiwan for decades, after questioning its legitimacy shortly after his election. Xi, a fan of soccer and other sports, is not known to play golf.

Activity in China's manufacturing sector unexpectedly expanded at the fastest pace in almost 5 years in March, adding to evidence that the world's second-largest economy has picked up momentum early this year, an official survey showed on Friday. Lu said Wednesday that China would stick to its climate commitments after Trump, who has called climate change a hoax, this week rescinded measures enacted by Obama to reduce coal and oil use.

The report also brought up longstanding complaints about online piracy of movies, books, music, video games and software in China as well as a ban on US beef that has been in place since 2003.

"Beijing is also suspicious of USA intentions in Taiwan, which China claims as its own".
