Beauty and the Beast Broke 5 Records in Its Opening Weekend

Days after "Beauty and the Beast" opened in Kuwait, censors pulled the Disney remake from theaters.

"Beauty and the Beast" is a clever update on the 1991 animated movie of the same name.

Next was Universal's horror film "Get Out", with $13.2 million in weekend receipts. The previous record-holder in North America was Pixar/Disney's "Finding Dory", which set sail to $135 million in summer 2016. "Beauty" also scored the top opening of all time for a PG film internationally, where it waltzed to $180 million, led by China ($44.8 million). According to Disney, more than 70 percent of ticket buyers were female on opening night, Friday, March 17. "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" previously held the title for biggest March opening with its premiere past year. "Beauty" also posted the biggest March opening ever in a number of foreign markets, including Mexico ($11.6 million), Germany ($10.7 million) and Spain ($5.8 million). It has taken in $133.1 million in four weeks.

"'Beauty and the Beast' is the latest example of Disney's perfectly executed strategy of going to their animation vaults, dusting off a classic and reinventing it as a modern live-action movie", said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. Opening at number one in Vietnam, India and Turkey, the film made $22.8 million in the United Kingdom, the highest grossing three-day opening in the market for a PG movie, and $44.8 million in China, surpassing the entire run in China for fellow Disney titles Maleficent and Alice in Wonderland. "A huge production like Disney movies are known to draw a great deal of attention in Kuwait from both censors and film viewers", explained Sheikh Duaij.

The movie also took in over $182 million overseas, bringing its total opening weekend gross to approximately $357 million. It remains to be seen just how much "Beauty and the Beast" ultimately takes in, but it appears destined to become part of the billion-dollar club.
