Thailand's 25-year-old, coin-eating turtle in coma after 2nd surgery

A sea turtle nicknamed "Piggy Bank" has died after complications from surgery to remove almost 1,000 coins she swallowed during captivity, Thai vets said Tuesday. Eventually, the money formed a weight that cracked Bank's shell.

Chansue pointed out one happier aspect, according to the AP: "She at least had the chance to swim freely and eat happily before she passed". The coins has been thrown into her home pond in Thailand over the years by people hoping for good luck, but it turns out that Omsin thought they were food and ate them.

Doctors performed a second, 2 1/2 hour-operation, but Omsin never woke up and died yesterday afternoon.

During that surgery, five surgeons from Chulalongkorn University's veterinary faculty patiently removed the coins over four hours while "Piggy Bank" was under general anesthesia.

Although the turtle initially appeared to be recovering well, a check-up over the weekend revealed intestinal problems.

In February, veterinarians at the Bangkok University asked the navy to send Omsin to its animal hospital for a check-up, after the team found the turtle to be swimming sideways without using her left leg.

Omsin's improvement did not last long, however, as the veterinarians discovered her condition was suddenly deteriorating on Saturday.

A turtle has died following surgery to remove 915 coins she swallowed while living in a good fortune pool.

The vet also slammed authorities for placing the turtle in the small artificial pond, which she believed affected her intake of essential nutrients such as fish and caused the animal to become depressed as it was devoid of toys and decorations.
