German Minister Says 'Policy We Advocate Helps Le Pen Become President'

Mar 22, 2017, 00:27

Only the top two candidates go through to the 7 May runoff, where polls suggest Mr Macron will easily beat Ms Le Pen.

"(Le Pen's) visit can be explained by a tacit support of the favourite candidate of the presidential elections and the continuity of France's African policy, which undermines the hope of the African youth and consolidates dictatorships in place", Halata said earlier this week.

At the start of the debate, Macron, the 39-year-old former economy minister who has never run for election before, seemed subdued, perhaps more used to making speeches alone on stage than debating rivals. You can see she's a veteran politician.

BERLIN: France must accelerate reforms and changes to tackle growing social and economic problems that are fueling nationalism, populism and the rise of Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Front, a top German official said on Tuesday.

But the scandal, which has dominated the campaign for weeks, occupied relatively little time in the debate. Mentioning the case of autism, which is not a recognised condition in France, Ms Le Pen said that, in her view, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada were highlighting the French incompetence around the illness.

Opinion polls show the pair holding a strong lead ahead of the more experienced centre-right contender Francois Fillon, and left-wingers Benoit Hamon and Jean-Luc Melenchon.

But with so many voters undecided and polls showing the abstention rate could be higher than ever in France, the level of uncertainty remains high.

The election is taking place against a backdrop of high unemployment and sluggish growth.

Emmanuel Macron, left, greets Francois Fillon.

Fillon, accused of paying his wife a generous salary for work she may not have done, has been put under formal investigation, a first for a French presidential candidate.

"That's called Project Fear, Mr Fillon".

Macron also scored well when viewers were asked how the debate had affected their views of the candidates. "I know polling is valid, but under that rule, I could not have participated in the primaries [debate]".

"Europe was, is and will remain a life insurance for us in times of crisis, and in the end, I'm convinced that the citizens of France will see it the way large majorities did in the Netherlands, as well as Germany", he said.

A total of 11 candidates are running for president.
