US Government Bans Large Electronics on Flights Originating in 13 Countries

Mar 21, 2017, 00:32

Authorities plan to ban US-bound passengers travelling from about a dozen countries from carrying most electronic devices.

Those items "can be carried in the checked baggage only", the airline said.

The Transportation Security Administration, which ensures that security meets USA standards at airports that send flights to the USA, and the Department of Homeland Security each said: "We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide any update as appropriate".

Middle East airlines are facing another threat to their long-haul operations, with signs that United States authorities have barred flag carriers from Saudi Arabia and Jordan - along with airlines from at least 11 other countries - from allowing passengers on board with any electronic device larger than a cell phone.

So far, only Royal Jordanian Airlines has tweeted about (and subsequently deleted its message).

The ban will apply to devices larger than a mobile phone, the official said.

The Royal Jordanian tweet specifically mentions laptops, cameras, DVD players, and gaming devices as banned at the request of "the concerned U.S. departments".

Representatives for the Transportation Security Administration and the Trump administration have yet to confirm or deny the reports. It is unclear which airlines are affected. "However, what seems certain is that Royal Jordanian wasn't misinterpreting some policy, but rather there's some intelligence that's about to change travel for a lot of people".

The TSA not immediately respond to a request for comment, or questions regarding the directive. This ban, like the earlier one, has been halted by a court.

The ban is said to be for a limited period which was not specified.
