Cheerios Seeds: Bees Need Help, So Cereal Maker Giving Away Free Flowers

Cheerios sites facts on its website about declining bee populations, such as "42 percent of bee colonies in the USA collapsed in 2015" and "1 in 3 bites of food we eat is made possible by bees and other pollinators". The company teamed up with Vesey's seeds and offered to send out 100 million free wildflower seeds to customers who wanted to help, they ended up actually sending out 1.5 billion seeds before they ran out.

Cheerios is encouraging people to plant the seeds to help the bees restore their normal population. The company claims that 30 percent of their ingredients are pollinated by bees and they're hoping consumers will join them in attempting to combat the disappearing bee population.

General Mills has pulled its bee mascot Buzz from Honey Nut Cheerios cereal boxes in the U.S. to mark the start of the brand's #BringBackTheBees campaign to help support pollinator conservation.

Bees play a crucial role in our food supply. This isn't a new phenomenon and environmentalists, bee activists, scientists, farmers and others have been trying for years to figure out why. Over two-thirds of the world crop species rely on bees and other pollinators. The fronts of boxes have a large bright-green callout to "Help Bring Back the Bees". Honey Nut Cheerios plans to host more than 3,000 acres of bee habitat on its oat farms by 2020, General Mills announced. "By taking the bold step of removing a well-established brand symbol from its packaging, General Mills is further challenging marketing's conventional thinking to underscore its point".

Despite the success of the companies wildflower planting efforts previous year, bee populations throughout North America remain unstable and work remains to be done.

"I'm happy that they're promoting bees; that they're promoting pollinators; if it benefits them, that's fine with me; it's getting the word out there; people are talking about it; they're handing out seeds".
