Trump plan to defund the arts could hit video game educational programs

Adrien Brody is sick over President Trump's proposal to eliminate funding for the National Endowment for the Arts.

Arts for LA, an advocacy organization dedicated to promoting arts and culture, hasn't received NEA funding for the last two years, Klatzker said.

Speaking with the Monitor from an event at a rural town in South Carolina, Pam Breaux, CEO of the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, says everything around her "is indicative of the public benefits of the arts to rural communities".

"He was the one that laid the ground work for creation of the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities", she said.

Federal funding amounts to roughly 11 percent of the annual budget for WPR and WPT, which is significant, but there is a great deal of support from within the state for the organizations, according to Brett.

LAUSD Superintendent Michelle King issued a general statement disapproving of Trump's proposed budget.

The Corporation of Public Broadcasting now has a budget of $445 million, while the National Endowments for the Arts and Humanities each have a budget of $148 million.

About 100,000 students a day attend Beyond the Bell programs, said Alvaro Cortes, the executive director of the program. Without the subsidy from the National Endowment of the Humanities, he said that same webinar would cost $300.

"We owe a lot of our success to the funding that's been provided by the NEH", Ellington said. If they weren't subsidizing these programs, we wouldn't be there.

President Trump has also proposed eliminating the Institute for Museum and Library Science, which helped fund SFMOMA's new Photography Interpretive Gallery.

Rapid City Arts Council Executive Director Pepper Massey says, "Economic development".

Several Hollywood personalities immediately took to Twitter where they spoke out against the proposed budget cuts.

"I like to think that the mark of a successful community is a thriving arts culture", Gilbert said. "That negative stuff is going to happen, but it's not the whole story, and it's not even the biggest part of the story". Kids learn more when they're experienced (exposed) to the arts. The Essex Art Center is also a recipient of Mass Cultural Council grants.

The Martin Museum showcases art of many forms, including sculptures such as the one above.

"What's happening when producing companies get funded is that you lose any aspect of creative destruction, so when you unsubsidize companies that are actually trying to tighten their belts and create new ways to bring in more audience, not for-profit companies and the companies that the NEA funds are more incentivized to go after grants than they are to go after the audiences", Mr. Marcus tells the Monitor in a phone interview.

Money from the NEA and NEH finds its way to Wisconsin to help fuel the state's arts scene and enrich its cultural life. Beyond the Bell, the school district division that oversees after-school programs, would see a 16 percent cut to its budget, said Barbara Jones of the district's communications office.

Tebaldi and others believe the president's budget likely won't get passed in Congress without adjustments, with Democrats and some Republicans coming out against the proposed cuts. "I'd say uncertainty and frustration seem to be the dominant emotions right now, really anything could happen".
