Raiders' tight end depth chart gets big boost with Jared Cook
Mar 17, 2017, 00:58
Former Green Bay Packers tight end Jared Cook has already left Seattle and Minnesota without signing a contract, and now it's the Oakland Raiders' turn to convince him to join them. Oakland now has five tight ends on the books for next season. He did, however, have a clutch sideline catch to set up the game-winning field goal in the Packers' divisional round matchup against the Cowboys.
He started five regular season games, played in 10, but missed six due to injury and he's has developed a reputation for dropping passes. In fact, for the sake of respecting Cook's ability, let's watch that one more time. The 8-year National Football League veteran has caught 303 passes for 3880 yards and 17 touchdowns over his career. He notably spent the next three seasons as a member of the St. Louis Rams before heading to the Green Bay Packers for just the 2016-2017 campaign.
For his career, Cook has 303 receptions for 3,880 yards and 17 touchdowns. That's not Cook's fault, since he's not in charge of whether or not he's thrown the ball, but it does show there's no reason for any team to put tremendous stock in his addition to the roster. In games in which Cook played, the Packers were 8-2 and averaged 28.4 points per game.
With Cook on the books and Walford still under his rookie contract, it affords Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie the freedom to pick up a tight end late in the draft if he chooses, to sign an undrafted tight end, or to simply stand pat. Carr will certainly enjoy another reliable target to go with Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree.
