Minnesota Vikings sign Syracuse native Latavius Murray

Mar 17, 2017, 00:57

The Minnesota Vikings have ruled out re-signing Adrian Peterson.

Peterson is one of the best players in Vikings history, but Minnesota is better off going in a different direction.

General manager Rick Spielman announced that the Vikings will not re-sign Peterson, who is a free agent, after they earlier reached an agreement with former Oakland Raiders running back Latavius Murray.

The Vikings declined their option on Peterson's contract for 2017 and made him a free agent for the first time. He visited with the Seahawks last weekend, but their signing of Eddie Lacy would seem to cross Seattle off the list. In 2015, he had 1,066 rushing yards and six scores. He rushed for 2,278 yards and 20 touchdowns in three seasons with the Raiders.

Though not a literal trade, Peterson in Oakland and Latavius Murray in Minnesota would in effect be exactly that.

"There wasn't a thought in my mind to try and wear or ask for the #28", said Murray, via Instagram.

Now that Peterson will actually get to pick his second National Football League team as an unrestricted free agent, don't expect him to end up there.

There were 88 running backs to notch at least 30 rushing attempts past year.

"When I saw that maybe this could be a team that I'd be playing at, obviously you think about those different scenarios", Murray said. A proven power runner with short-yardage prowess - as evidenced by 12 rushing touchdowns last season - he also feels he can be used in the passing game.

Peterson was selected with the seventh overall pick of the 2007 NFL Draft, the first after Spielman's arrival in Minnesota.
