Two top Minnesota chefs reel in James Beard Award nominations

Despite landing three semifinalists - chefs Ferrell Alvarez, Chris Ponte and restaurateur Richard Gonzmart - Tampa Bay, and the rest of the state, unfortunately didn't walk away with any nominations for the 2017 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards.

On the national level, Aaron Silverman's prix fixe Pineapple and Pearls is among the finalists for Best New Restaurant.

After 15 years as executive chef at Tennessee's famed Blackberry Farm, the North Carolina-native Fleer became the chef of Canyon Kitchen at Lonesome Valley in Cashiers, opening Rhubarb in downtown Asheville in 2013. Final James Beard Award nominees status was given to Cure and Arnaud's French 75 in New Orleans, Bar Argicole in San Francisco, Dead Rabbit in New York City and Clyde Common in Portland, Oregon.

Calagione, founder of the Milton craft brewery, has just received his seventh consecutive James Beard Award finalist nomination in the category of most outstanding Wine, Beer, or Spirits Professional.

Last month, 20 semifinalists were announced in each category.

The James Beard Awards have been around since 1990, honoring the nation's top chefs and recognizing culinary excellence.

This is the third nomination for the chefs, who were also finalists a year ago.

You can find a complete list of finalists here. Awards include Outstanding Bar Program, Outstanding Baker and Rising Star Chef. Death and Taxes was a finalist in 2016 for Best New Restaurant.

Nora Pouillon of Restaurant Nora is the recipient of the 2017 James Beard Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.
