Patriots sign free agent RB Rex Burkhead

The team announced on Tuesday afternoon that it signed free agent running back Rex Burkhead.

During his time in Cincinnati, Burkhead logged 87 rushes for 375 yards and three touchdowns plus 34 receptions for 288 yards and one touchdown. While making at least nine regular season appearances for the Bengals in each of the last three seasons, he failed to see the field during a regulation game as a rookie back in 2013-2014.

Both Dion Lewis and James White are under contract through 2017.

The former Cincinnati Bengals tailback is a versatile player who contributed on offense and special teams. He averaged 8.5 yards per reception, catching 17 passes for 145 yards. He rushed for 344 yards and two touchdowns for the Bengals in 2016. Before signing Burkhead, New England was in desperate need of a bigger back. And who knows if they are done adding to their backfield, with last year's starter, LeGarrette Blount, now a free agent. Burkhead led the Bengals in special teams tackles last season in 209 total snaps.

Lewis and Burkhead could split early-down work and work at the goal line, and remember that Blount led the National Football League with 18 rushing touchdowns a year ago to go with 299 carries for 1,161 yards.

They likely have a similar vision for Burkhead. The Patriots have shown a reluctance to run him between the tackles, and Lewis and Burkhead can handle that job if another running back isn't added. But Burkhead may not be the only running back New England adds this offseason.
