Airlines Cancel 5300 Flights Ahead of US Northeast Storm

More than 500 flights have been canceled in and out of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and Midway International Airport for Monday due to winter weather conditions in which up to six inches of snow is expected. All Tuesday flights have been canceled at LaGuardia and Kennedy airports. "So a lot of people were on the phone over the weekend rebooking their Tuesday flights for Monday, so today is a very heavy day for us as a result".

Southwest Airlines listed RDU as one airport it expected to be affected on Monday. The airline is planning to resume normal operations Wednesday morning.

If you're headed to the airport to board a flight, you may want to check the status before leaving the house.

Chicago is bearing the largest share of Monday's cancellations, while Tuesday's disruptions are hitting hardest in the East, from Washington to Boston including the New York City area. Southwest and American Airlines account for the majority of cancelations.

For passengers ticketed for travel into or out of the Northeastern US this week, please visit your airline's website for more information on cancellations and re-booking procedures.

"I chose to move my flight to this morning just to be safe", said Friedman. "If you have any kind of flexibility in your schedule, take advantage of these travel waivers because air travel is going to be very challenging on Tuesday", said airport spokesperson Diane Gerace.

American Airlines: Customers traveling in and out of affected cities can alter their trips to travel March 15 or March 17, depending on the airport, without a change fee.
