Green Bay Packers sign Nick Perry to five-year deal

After winning Super Bowl LI with the New England Patriots, tight end Martellus Bennett was bullish on his chances of landing a lucrative new contract in the offseason.

In one bold, unexpected and nearly universally applauded decision, the tenor of Packers fans' discontent with general manager Ted Thompson subsided, as the tremor of his major free agent move sunk in. He started in just five games in his only season as a member of the Packers, but turned his game up to the next level come the postseason. "He has been a great teammate and a productive player since he joined us in 2012 and we look forward to the rest of his Packers career", Packers general manager Ted Thompson said.

The nine-year veteran Bennett played last season for New England, making 55 catches for 701 yards and seven touchdowns over 16 games. Peppers (2014) and Cook (2016) were cut by their previous teams and thus were "street" free agents and didn't count in the NFL's compensatory draft pick equation. He left Ithaca as a 300-pound All-American tackle with 40 games and 20 starts under his belt.

Last season, there were questions about Cook's hands, while drops have never been a significant problem for Bennett. And Bennett comes at even more of a value than it first appeared.

While keeping Perry, the Packers lost versatile safety Micah Hyde to the Buffalo Bills and center JC Tretter to the Cleveland Browns.

No, Martellus Bennett's contract isn't worth $18.45 million over three years.

The former Patriots tight end inked a three-year, $21 million deal with the Packers Friday, causing quite a stir.

Peppers came on strong late last season and finished with 7.5 sacks, moving him into fifth place all-time in National Football League history with 143.5.

Thus, they made the decision to pay up to keep their best pass rusher from last season.
