Steelers betting on youth by letting Lawrence Timmons walk

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirmed.

Timmons will be an asset for the Dolphins from day one.

The first first-round draft pick of head coach Mike Tomlin's tenure in 2007, Timmons became an integral part of the team's defense by 2008, helping the Steelers to a Super Bowl victory. He'll again be paired this season with five-time Pro Bowl end Cameron Wake.

The Miami Dolphins have added veteran linebacker Lawrence Timmons, as is being reported by multiple sources.

Timmons had 114 tackles and 2.5 sacks previous year.

Timmons can hit, he can rush and he can cover.

Timmons was coming off a down year for his standards, but to his credit, he increased his value with a contract year of 114 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a forced fumble and two interceptions.

He has also missed just two games in his National Football League career, which made him one of the few consistently reliable defensive players on the Steelers roster over the past several years.

It now appears the Steelers will move in that direction. Timmons will be taking over the role of leading a Dolphins defense that was ranked 30th in the league previous year against the run, giving up 4.8 yards per carry.

While Pittsburgh's success is predicated largely on the offense led by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, running back Le'Veon Bell and wide receiver Antonio Brown, losing Timmons potentially weakens a defensive unit that was already suspect to some degree. He'll turn 31 soon, which isn't ideal, but Miami needed a nasty linebacker or two and fast.
