2 new mumps cases confirmed at TDSB schools

With the addition of the two new cases, the total number of possible and confirmed cases of mumps in Lake County stands at 32.

There were two confirmed cases and dozens more suspected as of Thursday at Barrington High School, according to principal Stephen McWilliams.

In a newsletter, school officials assured parents that they shouldn't feel overly concerned about the case.

"CPS is supporting the Chicago Department of Public Health as it investigates a potential case of mumps".

All three schools with mumps cases are within the Toronto District School Board, the board confirmed.

This comes on the day the Lake County Health Department declared a mumps outbreak after Barrington High School reported three cases. Health officials recommend that students and staff that are not vaccinated either get the vaccine or stay home to stop the virus from spreading.

There were more suspected cases at Prairie and Station middle schools.

The possible case, which hasn't been confirmed, is at Helen C. Pierce School of International Studies, 1423 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., in the Andersonville neighborhood, the report stated.

Symptoms of mumps include swelling and pain in the jaw, fever, headache, tiredness, aching muscles and joints, and vomiting.

"However, if there are multiple cases in a school...we actually have the ability to exclude students who are not up-to-date with their immunizations from school", Dubey said.

The disease is commonly spread through sneezing, coughing, sharing of cups or other items that have come in contact with saliva, the department said.
