Suspect who cops say shot at pipeline killed after chase

Someone called 911 at about 9 a.m.to report that a man armed with a high-powered rifle was shooting at the Sabal Pipeline and equipment on State Road 200 near Dunnellon, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said.

A man died in a shootout with deputies from the Citrus County Sheriff's Office and Florida State Troopers on Sunday. Some compare it to the Dakota Access Pipeline.

The suspect fled the scene in a 2016 Chevrolet pickup truck, also leading Citrus County deputies and FHP troopers on a chase into Citrus County.

Protesters believe that the pipeline will jeopardize the Floridan Aquifer, which is where most of Florida's drinking water comes from as well as damage other sensitive ecological areas. No deputies were injured.

After a trooper spotted the truck and stopped it, the suspect began shooting at the trooper and deputies, according to FHP. "He's in full tactical gear, it looks like", Matthews said.

The incident is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The suspect then opened fire at the trooper and deputies before he was fatally shot, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Police have identified a man who was fatally shot by officers after he was suspected of firing a gun at a pipeline construction site and fleeing. "In response, law enforcement agents initiated a chase into Citrus County that ended in him being killed".
