An agreement seems to have been struck with Telstra to discount the bandwidth used by the titles for the objective of the scheme - an innovation which may interest net neutrality advocates in the United States and elsewhere.
These projects lay the foundations of the program we described in October 2016 and provide the foundation for Telstra's Network of the Future program which is essential to delivering our customers a brilliantly connected future.
Telstra and Ericsson have announced they will be deploying a Cat M1 Internet of Things (IoT) network throughout Australia, with trials now taking place in Melbourne and Tasmania. It is suitable for devices using mobility, voice support and moderate bitrates in the order of hundreds of kbps, like vehicle telematics, asset tracking, consumer and healthcare wearables and smart electricity metering.
For the IoT initiative, Telstra and Ericsson have now commenced localized CAT-M1 trials in Melbourne and Tasmania in the first stage of a deployment across Telstra's 4G network, which covers over 98% of Australia's population.
Telstra Group Managing Director for Networks Mike Wright said 99% of Telstra's 4GX-branded sites are already LTE-B compatible, and the operator aims to achieve nationwide coverage by next year. "Cat-M1 can enhance LTE coverage for underground and in-building areas that challenge existing coverage".
LTE-B is created to provide a constant bitrate data channel for broadcast content, with the bitrate not decreasing regardless of how many subscribers are watching simultaneously.
"Ericsson is working closely with Telstra to deliver next-generation technologies in each key area of Telstra's network", Head of Ericsson Australia and New Zealand Emilio Romero said. Our expanded optical network will support important emerging network capabilities such as IoT, 5G and enhanced media delivery.
"This collaboration between Telstra, Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies will help ensure 5G is ready for the Australian environment, including making sure it is able to be scaled up for our vast distance and sparse population, as well as ensuring our customers will be among the first in the world to enjoy the benefits of 5G". The trial is aimed at highlighting the new technologies that use wide bandwidths available at higher-frequency bands to increase network capacity and accelerate the commercialisation of the global 3GPP 5G standard.
According to the announcement, prefiguring further news at Mobile World Congress 2017, the latest entertainment titles will be made available to participating consumers at the highest quality, and with the sanction of participating studios.
