74 dead migrants washed ashore in Libya

The bodies of 87 African migrants have washed ashore in the Libyan city of Zawiya, in the latest drowning tragedy to hit the region. Initial figure put the dead at 45, however, the Libya Red Crescent, that confirmed the tragic incident says it has recovered 74 bodies from the shore.

A spokesman for the aid organisation said there were still bodies floating out at sea as the agency had no way of retrieving them.

Mr al-Misrati also said local authorities will take the bodies to a cemetery in the capital of Tripoli that's allocated for unidentified persons.

"While the number of people taking the eastern Mediterranean and west Balkans route to travel into Europe (has) obviously significantly dropped since past year, there hasn't been a fall in the number of people. traveling through the central Mediterranean routes from Libya to Italy", Ryan said.

Dozens of bodies believed to be migrants have washed up on Libya's shore.

Footage released by the Libyan coastguard shows the rubber boat with no engine, raising concerns that people smugglers might have deliberately removed it. More than 4,500 are known to have died.

More bodies have been spotted in the sea near Zawiya but aid workers have not yet been able to recover them.

Leggeri blamed the small dinghies and poor vessels used by the smugglers for the high death rate.

Having largely closed off sea crossings between Turkey and Greece previous year, the European Union is searching for ways to stem the flow of migrants from Libya. That's compared to 2 869 deaths in 2015 and 3 161 in 2014.

Europeans are considering measures aimed at blocking the arrival of thousands of migrants, alarming NGOs which fear that those stranded in Libya may suffer mistreatment.

Libya is split by competing governments and many militias rule on the ground, many of them profiting from smuggling and human trafficking. The EU itself describes Libya as "unsafe" and systematic violence towards refugees and migrants has been widely documented.
