Half-brother of dictator Kim Jong Un is assassinated

Doan Thin Hoang, 28, is one of two women suspected in Monday's fatal poisoning of Kim Jong Nam at Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

South Korea's TV Chosun reported Kim was killed when two women attacked him with poisoned needles at the airport, citing anonymous sources.

Kim Jong-nam had told airport workers that someone had attacked him "from behind" and sprayed him in the face with an unknown liquid. In October 2012 South Korean prosecutors said a North Korean detained as a spy had admitted involvement in a plot to stage a hit-and-run vehicle accident in China in 2010.

South Korea's prime minister will preside over a national security council meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss the suspected murder of the North Korean leader's estranged half-brother in Malaysia, his office said.

"It reflects Kim Jong-Un's propensity for paranoia, rather than his calculated act of removing a threat to his rule". The NIS has a history of botching intelligence on North Korea and has long sought to portray the country's leaders as mentally unstable.

Kim Jong Il died in December 2011, when Kim Jong Un took power. DW Akademie reported that Kim Jong Un had a standing assassination order on his brother with a failed attempt even occurring in 2012.

Malaysian police official Fadzil Ahmat told Reuters that Kim was at the airport's budget terminal awaiting a flight to Macau on Monday when someone grabbed his face from behind.

Jong-nam, who used to be called the "Little General" and was once heir-apparent to his father Kim Jong-il, fell from grace in 2001 after a spectacular blunder. It follows the defection previous year of a senior diplomat from the North Korean Embassy in London who has spoken of his despair at Kim's purges.

However, Malaysia is yet to formally confirm that the dead man is Kim Jong-nam, as he was travelling under a different name, Kim Chol.

Jong-Nam was an advocate of reform in the North, and once told a Japanese newspaper that he opposed his country's dynastic power transfers.

YG: Not only me, but other North Korean defectors whom I met in Japan, said something like this about Kim Jong Nam: "North Korea can change".

The most spectacular was the 2013 execution of his uncle, Jang Song Thaek.

South Korea's acting leader, Hwang Kyo-Ahn, said the assassination illustrated the "brutal and inhumane" nature of the Pyongyang regime. After all, Kim Jong-nam spent most of his time in Macau.

Given Kim Jong Un's recent dismissal of a close aide and head of the secret police, some believe the murder resulted from a race between the secret police and the spy agency to prove their loyalty to the supreme leader.
