Villanova named No. 1 overall seed in early NCAA tournament bracket reveal

The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee released its first edition of the top 16 seeds for March Madness on Saturday.

Defending national champion Villanova was the No. 1 overall seed, followed by Kansas, Baylor and Gonzaga. West Virginia, UCLA and Duke completed the 4 seeds.

"One of the reasons why you didn't see any Big Ten teams in that top 16 is because, as a league, they didn't get the job done outside the conference".

Louisville, Florida State and North Carolina received two seeds.

If the season ended today, Louisville would be a 2-seed in the east, and Kentucky would be a 3-seed.

Virginia was the 10th overall seed and placed in the West Region.

Apparently, Thursday night's win over OR didn't impress the committee that much.

After missing the NCAA Tournament in each of the last four seasons, the Seminoles are now in the midst of their best season in perhaps decades at 21-4 overall and 9-3 in ACC play. NCAA Tournament chairman Mark Hollis will be on the show with host Greg Gumbel and analysts Clark Kellogg and Seth Davis.

This year, the closest is the East Regional in NY, and for 'Nova, who won last year as the No. 2 seed in the South Region, that's exactly where they'd decide to play, according to the committee.

Florida moved to 20-5 on the season and is now in first place in the Southeastern Conference standings with their win Saturday over Texas A&M. The entire 68-team bracket will be announced on March 12th. Florida was assigned to its closest remaining regional site, which was Memphis, leaving the final No. 3 seed, Kentucky, to play in New York City. Hollis said Wisconsin and Purdue were among the teams that were just outside that group. First- and second-round games will air on TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV.
