Azhar steps down as Pakistan ODI captain, Sarfraz to lead

Feb 10, 2017, 01:40

Sarfraz Ahmed is set to take the ODI reins, confirms Pakistan Cricket Board chief Shehryar Khan.

It should be mentioned here that Azhar Ali led series against Australia which ended in miserable 1-4 rout. Numerous former players and cricket experts were already demanding to make Sarfraz Ahmed ODI captain.

The captain informed about decision regarding step down from captaincy, said Chairman PCB.

Azhar's captaincy stint began on a woeful note with Pakistan suffering an ignominious 0-3 whitewash at the hands of Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, PCB Chairman Shehryar Khan has hinted that Misbah's future is also in question. They were thought to be united in their belief that Sarfraz should take over the ODI captaincy but were going to wait until Misbah-ul-Haq retired to name a new Test captain. They have since risen one place to at least be in the running for direct qualification to the 2019 World Cup. Under his leadership in the four T20Is that he has led Pakistan, they have picked up wins in all of them. In September past year, following a 4-1 loss in England, Shaharyar had asked Azhar to consider stepping down.

The young captain has led his team in four T20s so far - one against England at Manchester and three against West Indies in the UAE, after taking charge previous year.

Pakistan name Sarfraz as new ODI captain was posted in Sports of TheNews International - https://www.thenews.com.pk on February 10, 2017 and was last updated on February 10, 2017. In the recently-concluded ODI series loss against Australia, he had scores of 24, 7 and 6 in his three appearances.
