Nik Wallenda unhurt as 5 hurt in Florida circus high-wire fall

Feb 09, 2017, 00:26

Multiple performers were seriously injured at Circus Sarasota when five people fell at least 30 feet while practicing a high-wire routine early Wednesday afternoon.

There is one confirmed trauma alert.

Officials said he managed to catch himself and was not among the physically injured, but is emotionally distraught.

"They're extremely lucky, given the high of the fall that they survived", Brockhurst said.

The team at Circus Sarasota was rehearsing for a show that is set to open February 10. Wallenda is billed as the headliner for the show, "Synergy".

Reis said it was not the first time the group has attempted the act and it was performed "flawlessly" in rehearsal Tuesday.

Local media reports said Nik Wallenda was the anchor for the pyramid when the accident happened. The rigging, he emphasized, did not collapse.

World-famous high wire performer Nik Wallenda was on the high wire, according to Winston Simone, who is a spokesperson for DSW Entertainment. He has found fame in recent years performing daredevil walks over Niagara Falls, a gorge near the Grand Canyon, between Chicago skyscrapers and across the rim of the Orlando Eye observation wheel.

Authorities are investigating and said Wallenda may make a statement later Wednesday. "Nik was at the rear of pyramid and did not fall off the wire".
