Sasikala to be next Tamil Nadu CM: Events as they unfolded

Sasikala, 62, shadow of Jayalalithaa for almost three decades, was today set to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as the AIADMK Legislature Party elected her as its leader, over a month after she became the party's powerful General Secretary.

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leaders then elected VK Sasikala as the leader of the Legislature party, clearing the decks for "Chinamma" to be sworn in as chief minister in the coming week.

In December a year ago, four state ministers had asked Sasikala to become the Chief Minister, besides AIADMK General Secretary.

It was another "small stint" as chief minister of Tamil Nadu for O Panneerselvam as the AIADMK leader had to resign from the top post for the third time.

"When Jayalalithaa had to vacate the post of Chief Minister following court verdicts in 2001 and 2014, she had handpicked Panneerselvam to be the Chief Minister".

The meeting has been calledafter Sasikala appointed some former ministers and others to various party posts.

Sasikala belongs to the dominant Thevar community like O Panneerselvam.

Sasikala, 62, had been a close aide of Jayalalithaa for three decades and was always seen as a power centre in AIADMK.

Sasikala, came into limelight after the demise of former Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalithaa.

However, there is some confusion about the day on which Chinnamma would be sworn in as Chief Minister.

Panneerselvam was appointed as Chief Minister on the night of 5 December within hours of the death of his predecessor J Jayalalithaa. The move comes almost two months after her demise. The Chief Minister's Office, the official said, is preparing to call a conference of all district collectors and police chiefs.

Sasikala, 61, is not an elected member of the assembly and had never held any post in the party.

Earlier, there were reports that the party's lawmakers were not informed about the meeting agenda.

Once the video recorder for AIADMK, Sasikala is now going to be the 7th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Sasikala also announced removal of Ambattur MLA V Alexander as AIADMK's MGR Youth Wing Secretary. "I believe she will factor in people's opinions on this change", he said in a statement.

And even as these questions were being asked by reporters on live TV, Tamil Nadu's cabinet ministers made a beeline to Veda Nilayam at 1pm.
