Knifeman storms Louvre in Paris as French soldier opens fire

A French soldier opened fire on a machete-wielding man who threatened security personnel outside Paris's Louvre museum on Friday morning, police said.

Donald Trump today leapt on the latest Paris terror incident to warn U.S. citizens to "get smart".

A French soldier is thought to have opened fire at a man who tried to enter the world-famous museum with a suitcase - what else do we know?

The attack happened in the Carousel du Louvre underground shopping center near the museum, which was closed to the public within minutes of the attack being reported. One soldier suffered a minor scalp injury from the attack.

Checks of the man's two backpacks found they didn't contain explosives, Cadot said.

This was later confirmed by the Egyptian Ministry of the Interior in Cairo.

As authorities probed the attacker's background French President Francois Hollande said that "there is little doubt as to the terrorist nature of this act", an assessment echoed by Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve.

French officials have repeatedly dismissed security concerns over the Olympic bid despite the wave of attacks that have left more than 200 people dead in the country over the past two years. According to The Associated Press, two officials close to the investigation said several police raids are underway in connection to the attack at the Louvre.

Officials say the man was shot five times during the February 3 incident, in which he shouted "God is greatest" in Arabic before lashing out at security guards.

The suspect is said to be in his mid-30s and did not have any identity papers.

Friday's attack targeted an entrance to a shopping mall that extends beneath the sprawling museum, a medieval former royal palace now home to the Mona Lisa and hundreds of other masterpieces. She said that "there is not a single one escaping that menace". The state of emergency was prolonged until the end of January 2017, following a truck attack in the city of Nice, which claimed over 80 lives.

Heavily armed soldiers have been on the streets of Paris since the terrorist attacks on the city in November 2015.
