French police RAID PARLIAMENT in Fillon investigation just hours after interrogation

Mr Fillon, who will be the centre-right candidate in this April's preliminary round of the presidential elections, claimed his wife's work was real and he is a victim of a smear campaign.

"This will sicken people who are on the minimum wage or not much more", the second lawmaker said.

Naomi Totten, Spokesperson for Betfair, commented on France 2017: "Francois Fillon was the clear favourite for presidency once chosen to represent the Republican Party in this year's election".

Welsh-born Mrs Fillon also faces allegations that she was unfairly paid €100,000 by a magazine called La Revue des Deux Mondes, owned by a close friend of Mr Fillon's, for writing two short articles.

Le Canard wrote on Tuesday that she was also employed as parliamentary assistant from 1988 to 1990. From midnight, she faces a pay cut of some 7,000 euros a month as punishment from the European Union parliament for using money earmarked for a parliamentary assistant to pay one of her own party officials.

The Canard said it could find no witnesses who could recall her working at parliament and Le Parisien newspaper reported she did not have an accreditation badge or an official email account at the National Assembly.

The payments involved were made between 1998 and 2013, the newspaper said.

However, there was no evidence she had really worked, the report said.

A trained lawyer, she told Britain's Sunday Telegraph newspaper after her husband became prime minister in 2007 that she preferred staying at home than in glitzy Paris.

Macron who announced his official candidacy last November has been labelled as the French Left's best hope at defeating hard-right candidate Marie Le Pen, who is now Betfair's third market favourite at 7/2 (21% chance of win).
