Washington state suing Trump over immigration order

Attorneys general from 15 US states and the District of Columbia Sunday condemned President Donald Trump's executive order temporarily barring refugees and seven Muslim-majority countries' citizens from entry into the United States, calling it "unconstitutional, un-American and unlawful".

After Trump signed the executive order, Rich Stolz of Seattle-based OneAmerica issued a reminder that the United States was built on religious freedom and equality.

Attorney General Ferguson said the lawsuit seeks to prove several provisions in President Trump's executive order are unconstitutional and should invalidate the entire order.

Ferguson argues that the Executive Order violates the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of Equal Protection and the First Amendment's Establishment Clause, infringes individuals' constitutional right to Due Process and contravenes the federal Immigration and Nationality Act.

Trump has repeatedly said that the move is aimed at protecting the nation against extremists looking to attack Americans and American interests.

Ferguson said the lawsuit against Trump, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and high-ranking Trump administration officials would be filed on January 30 in federal court in Seattle.

Along with Washington State, the ACLU and CAIR have also filed lawsuits in response to Trump's executive order. Washington congressman Dave Reichert, R-Wash., said Trump's plan makes sense as a way to provide security and protect the American public, but said implementation of the order so far has been chaotic and improperly carried out.

The president noted the seven majority-Muslim countries targeted by the executive order had been identified by the Obama administration as "sources of terror", adding, "This is not about religion; this is about terror and keeping our country safe".

"Resistance is not futile", Governor Inslee said.

Asked if he fears retaliation from the Trump administration, Inslee said "there's no predicting this president, but we will not yield, we will not be leveraged, we will not be threatened, we will not be intimidated".

Other Washington state elected officials including U.S. Sen.

More people were reportedly affected by the ban over the weekend at airports across the country.

"Its impact, its cruelty, its clear objective is an unconscionable religious test, and its effect in America is that it's unconstitutional", he said. The countries - Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, and Somalia - together sent around 86,000 visitors to the United States in 2015, according to Department of Homeland Security data.
