Safety valve: 49ers hand GM reins to Lynch

Lynch also has a Super Bowl ring, from his 11-year tenure with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the hard-hitting safety played his final four seasons with the Denver Broncos.

Reporters from all around the Bay Area and Sacramento lofted soft ball questions to the Niners' beloved owner, praising him for yet another successful decision. He is also a Hall of Fame finalist this year, so this could be a huge week for Lynch.

After recently landing John Lynch as the franchise's new general manager, the San Francisco 49ers are officially headed in a new direction - again. Elway brought Denver to the playoffs in his first five seasons as an executive and appeared in two Super Bowls, winning the Lombardi Trophy this time past year at Levi's Stadium. Shanahan can't be officially hired until after the Super Bowl.

According to Schefter, Lynch phoned Shanahan a week ago and offered to take the job.

For weeks, the 49ers conducted their search for a new general manager, speaking to some of the most respected, sought-after candidates in the league.

The one and only person to get a G.M. job with the same resume as Lynch - a long career playing defense in the National Football League followed by several years as a broadcaster - is Matt Millen.

Lynch wasn't publicly known to be a candidate until the news broke that he landed the job.

Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly each lasted a single season in the role, before the team handed a beefy, almost unprecedented offer to Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who can't technically sign a contract until his season is over the second the clock strikes zero in the upcoming Super Bowl.

"If it was me, if I was John Lynch, I would hire Kyle Shanahan's dad, Mike Shanahan, as the general manager". Lynch, who last played in 2008, has never had any front office position in the NFL. "I know he's been doing some work with John Elway".

Millen's advice to Lynch: "It's not about understanding the game and knowing the game". I know it's a tough task [because] San Francisco's not in a great place right now just in terms of personnel. "It's about managing people", he said.
