Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor talk up possible showdown

On Saturday night, McGregor - who is under an exclusive contract with the UFC - claimed that he was capable of getting around that agreement to take part in a boxing match with former division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather made the comments during an interview with Jim Gray during Showtime Championship Boxing's telecast of the Carl Frampton vs. Leo Santa Cruz fight, that Santa Cruz won by majority decision.

From there, Gray attempted to dig a bit deeper, looking for more of a commitment from the longtime boxing star who retired with an unblemished 49-0 record back in September of 2015. "We had to do a job on my side and hopefully all the fans in the United Kingdom come over and support me".

For McGregor, though, the fight represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become incredibly rich, and he clearly believes he can make the fight happen.

The 28-year-old Irishman said his first child - a boy - is due in the coming months. "The fans have been asking for this fight", Mayweather said. People (have) got to pay for a billion-dollar fight.

Hype follows McGregor wherever he goes, and there is near-constant discussion about what his next move will be.

"The next time I fight, I will step through the ropes with ... gloves on", he said. They'll say, 'You've made some money.

In a business sense, McGregor announced his ambitions to promote fights under the newly-formed McGregor Promotions.

The "situation" McGregor is referring to is a ridiculous $150,000 fine handed down by the Nevada Athletic Commission stemming from his press conference incident with Diaz leading up to UFC 202.

Speaking at a Q&A in Manchester, The Notorious told fans that he believed the next time he fought it would be in the squared circle.

Mayweather's fight against McGregor could hurt the PPV industry for other circus fights between boxers and MMA fighters in the future.

The first one that brought rumors of the fight was Mayweather. "I know Triple H was at the show (UFC 205)". If they let people go fight jiu-jitsu tournaments, they can't stop me going to fight a boxing fight. "Enjoy the fans, I get energy from this".

Despite it being widely reported late this week that Conor McGregor had rejected a deal to appear at WrestleMania 33 this year, don't count him out of the event just yet!
