December unemployment rates jumped throughout Lima region

San Francisco reported unemployment of 3 percent, while Santa Clara County reported unemployment of 3.3 percent.

"In 2016, payroll jobs rose in the state for the sixth consecutive year while Michigan's unemployment rate continued a downward trend, falling for the seventh year in a row".

Lane County's unemployment rate continued dropping last month, falling from 5.1 percent in November to 4.8 percent in December, according to the state Employment Department on Tuesday.

In November, Cayuga County's monthly rate was above the national but below the state level.

That's one-half a percentage point less than the 5.6 percent unemployment rate in December 2015, but up from 4.6 percent in August - the low point for the year.

Over the year of 2016, the average workweek for all employees on private nonfarm payrolls increased from 33.2 to 33.3 hours, and average hourly earnings decreased from $27.03 to $26.92. Rates ranged from 2.6 percent in Cumberland County to 5.5 percent in Somerset County.

On the down side, professional and business services jobs declined by 900 and the number of jobs in the government sector fell by 800.

But the number of employed people in the state, which includes the self-employed, rose by 11,200, which caused the unemployment rate to drop from 3.2 percent to 3 percent last month.

While the increase of almost 29,000 unemployed people to the state is a hit, total employment from from August to December 2016 rose by 54,000, bringing the state's total average for the year to 4,612,000 people employed in 2016, against 231,000 unemployed.
