Kansas City Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura and former major league infielder Andy Marte, who spent 2011 in the Pirates organization, were killed in separate auto accidents Sunday in the Dominican Republic, according to local authorities.
Several Royals teammates and other Major League Baseball players shared their condolences on Twitter after hearing of Ventura's death.
ESPN reported that Ventura, 25, died on a highway leading to Juan Adrian, about 40 miles northwest of the capital Santo Domingo, while Marte, 33, crashed his auto into a house 95 miles south of Santo Domingo.

The Taveras tribute game was arguably Ventura's finest moment, as he pitched through his emotions and led his team to victory, throwing seven shutout innings for the win. Before the game, he paid tribute to two friends who had passed away: Miami Marlins star pitcher Jose Fernandez, who died that week in a boat crash, and Oscar Taveras, the Cardinals outfielder who died in a vehicle crash before Game 6 of the 2014 World Series.
As a recipient of one of general manager Dayton Moore's first long-term contracts, Ventura made a five-year commitment to Kansas City at the age of 23.
The deaths of Marte and Ventura come just months after Major League Baseball lost Jose Fernandez.
Ventura, also born in the Dominican Republic, was a 25-year-old pitcher for the Kansas City Royals.
Ventura wore the initials of both men on his hat during the game, which the Royals lost 7-2. The majority of Marte's major league action came as a member of the Indians, with whom he batted.224/.281/.369 in 858 trips to the plate from 2006-10.
