Israel's Netanyahu to speak with Trump on Sunday

Both sides cite biblical, historical and political claims.

Conversely, Mr Trump has challenged the idea that halting settlement expansion is a prerequisite for peace negotiations.

Nimer also noted that the right-wing regime in Israel "consists mainly of settlers", adding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is going along with their demands by approving new settlement units. Each side has been accusing the other for not coming to the negotiating table.

"Israel must seize this historic opportunity to advance measures to show Israeli independence", she said. Jerusalem was placed under a special worldwide regime.

The United States is Israel's most important ally, providing it with more than $3 billion per year in defence aid. But lately, the two-state solution seems to have disappeared from Israeli discourse.

Majdalani stressed the importance of respecting United Nations resolutions legitimacy and the implementation of the recent anti -settlement decision 2334.

Israel tested that theory Sunday when Jerusalem city officials approved building permits for 566 new homes in east Jerusalem. The permits had been put on hold for the final months of the Obama administration.

The Egypt-sponsored UNSC Resolution 2334 was a turning point in American position on Israel.

Prior to the phone conversation, Netanyahu reportedly told his Security Cabinet that he would lift restrictions on building in eastern Jerusalem, and that he would soon announce West Bank settlement bloc expansion, the Times of Israel reported. The party's leader, Naftali Bennett, believes the Trump administration will be friendly to the settlement movement, and that Israel should therefore drop the idea of creating a Palestinian state and instead annex West Bank settlements. An angry Netanyahu reacted with name-calling and vowed not to abide by the Resolution.

'What was decided was to wait for the meeting which will certainly take place within a few weeks, ' Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz told Israeli public radio.

The academic also criticized the global community for not taking any concrete action against Israel in spite of the United Nations resolution.
