Its official, 2016 was the hottest year ever recorded

That is, until 2016, when the record was broken once more. Both NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information and NASA released information indicating the record average temperatures. It follows 2015 and 2014, which were the previous highs.

Global average temperatures during 2016 were 0.99 degrees warmer than the mid-20th century average.

Two U.S. agencies and global weather groups reported Wednesday that a year ago was the warmest on record.

2016 was the hottest year on Earth since record keeping began in 1880, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced Wednesday.

The Northern Hemisphere was also the warmest on record past year with an average temperature departure of +1.27 C, which beats out the previous record of +1.13 C set in 2015. The Arctic "was enormously warm, like totally off the charts compared to everything else", said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA's Goddard Institute of Space Studies in NY, where the space agency monitors global temperatures.

At present, while scientists would expect 2017 to be quite warm relative to, say, a year in the 1990s, there has been little talk of a fourth record year in a row.

Because weather station locations and measurement practices change over time, there are uncertainties in the interpretation of specific year-to-year global mean temperature differences.

The Great Lakes region was among many which were slightly warmer and wetter in 2016.

Climate scientist Michael Mann said: "For the first time in recorded history, we have now had three consecutive record-warm years for both the globe and the Northern Hemisphere".

The World Meteorological Organization and the climate monitoring agencies of Europe and Japan previously came to similar conclusions regarding 2016's record temperature.

For the contiguous Unites States, 2016 actually was the second warmest year on record. Schmidt says because of La Niña it'll likely be cooler than 2016. "It's really the trend, and the fact that we're punching at the ceiling every year now, that is the real indicator that we're undergoing big changes". Greenhouse gases are among the chief causes of global warming and climate change.
