Baltimore Ravens linebacker Zachary Orr retires

The former North Texas standout caught on with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2014, playing primarily special teams as a rookie.

"When I found out the news, it was shocking", Orr said Friday. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said he was open to having Orr on their coaching staff in the future and said that any organization would be lucky to have him.

The 6-foot, 225-pound Orr was then assigned to the weak-side linebacker spot next to middle linebacker C.J. Mosley and became an every-down linebacker for the first time in his career. Doctors informed Orr that less than one percent of people were born with the condition, but he choose to take a positive outlook after getting to play for 15 years without a problem.

Orr was initially placed on injured reserve after suffering a herniated disk Christmas day against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Orr will now turn the page to the next chapter in his life.

"Instead of asking - 'Why me?, ask 'What's next?'" Orr said.

"I'm really just blessed and thankful that we were able to find this problem", Orr said, via the Ravens' team website.

Orr's sudden retirement is surprising news for one of the NFL's most promising young linebackers, who was named a second-team All-Pro in 2016 during just his third season in the NFL.

But there's little doubt the Ravens would have made every effort to keep him, likely with a second-round tender in excess of $2.5 million.

"They've supported me through this", said Orr, who added that one of his high school teammates was paralyzed playing football. Some make a huge impact for the programs they play for, others pass through the doors without making a ripple.

The trio of brothers dreamed of playing together in the National Football League, an ambition that now, sadly, won't come true.
