Giving Back: Girl Scouts of America

The Granville Girl Scouts recently gathered during the Service Unit's "Cookie Palooza" on January 11.

They also learn business ethics, she said, being honest and responsible by keeping track of orders, funds, deadline and taking care of their customers.

To commemorate 100 years of the first known sale of cookies by Girl Scouts, a delicious, new flavor will be available when cookies go on sale in Nebraska on February 3.

So your cookie purchase is doing a lot more than providing a delicious break during your day - be sure to ask the Girl Scouts their projects and plans when you buy your cookies.

In 1917, members of the Mistletoe Troop of Muskogee, Oklahoma, made a decision to bake and sell cookies to raise money for its service projects.

Locally, the Girl Scouts of the Black Diamond Council serve the Huntington and Charleston communities.

The S'mores cookie is new, along with the classics: Shortbread, Thin Mint and Caramel deLites.

"This is a great example of how a program has evolved over the years", Einsiedel says.

Cookies will be sold through March 5.

Girl Scouts of the United States of America points to five basic skills girls learn by participating in cookie sales: money management, goal setting, decision-making, people skills and business ethics.

In addition to activities and programs, a hallmark of the Girl Scout Cookie Program has been giving back to their communities since 1917.

Local troops have used their proceeds for community service projects and educational trips.
