In other findings, App Annie said that Black Friday was the first day to ever generate over $1 billion in US online mobile sales.

Those the two reports come up with different figures, the same overall trends are apparent: users are spending more time in their apps, and games may not be a growth leader, on some fronts at least.

Given worldwide growth in both downloads and usage, publisher revenue grew 40 percent year-over-year - an acceleration over 2015's growth rate - resulting in $35 billion across iOS and Google Play app stores.

Stores in the U.S., state taxes are not included in the price advertised at point of sale.

The App Annie report also reports that the average smartphone user uses over 30 apps every month. "We're seeing major indications of this shift globally".

The change means an app that previously cost 79p will now cost 99p. China's App Store in particular saw dramatic growth in 2016, with activity expanding by 90 percent. However, 25 percent is a sizable increase overnight, and one which consumers will certainly notice. Apple is also said to discourage iPhone owners from downloading unapproved apps, threatening to make iPhone warranties void if they do so.

In its year-end retrospective, App Annie said USA time spent in apps grew more than 25 percent. The price increases will be about the same for all app tiers, according to 9to5 Mac. Last year, Indians downloaded 6.2 billion apps through Google Play, up from 3.6 billion in 2015, according to a recent report by App Annie.

Apple is raising App Store prices in the United Kingdom by more than 25 percent in response to the country's sharp currency devaluation after the Brexit vote, the BBC reports.

Apps have transformed the world of banking.

So what's next for the mobile app industry?

In India, in terms of number of downloads, social networking app Facebook, instant messaging app Whatsapp (also owned by Facebook) and mobile web browser UC Browser were the three most popular.

Apple's App Store serves users of the iPhone and iPad and in 2016 its sales rose to more than £23 billion ($28 billion).
