YouTube Introduces Super Chat, A New Way To Earn While You Stream

The Super Chat shall remain in the top position of the chat stream for almost five hours at a stretch. It's a unique new revenue source and something that will certainly appeal to YouTubers who want creators and other viewers to see their messages.

For Creators, this means Super Chat does double duty: keeping their conversations and connections with (super) fans meaningful and lively, while also giving Creators a new way to make money.

On Thursday, YouTube Product Manager Barbara Macdonald took to the YouTube Official Blog to announce Super Chat, a new tool that helps fans connect with creators during live streams.

As of now, Super Chat is still on beta, and only available for top YouTubers, including iHasCupquake, buzzbean11, and Alex Wassabi. The feature is all set to make its grand launch of 31 January 2017 in 20 countries and viewers more than 40 countries respectively. Keep in mind that Super Chat has a moderation tool where content creators can also blacklist inappropriate chat words or block harassing viewers. You'll also get a few more characters for your comment, and it will be highlighted in a different colour to help live streamers notice the paid comment. The more you pay, the more air time you get.

Your public Super Chat will be sent to all viewers during the live stream in the chat once your transaction is complete. On this problem, MacDonald said the company will apply the same moderation tools which are now available on regular YouTube for creators to block chat words and prevent harassing users from commenting. Fan Funding is being discontinued because it was not used on a large scale in the first place.

Super Chats are non-refundable. Fan Funding is being scrapped because it never achieved widespread usage outside of livestreams, according to YouTube. It's basically another way for creators to make money. The Fan Funding API has already stopped accepting signups, though it will continue to operate for existing accounts until February 28.
