Lord Snowdon, Princess Margaret's ex-husband, dies aged 86

Lord Snowdon, the former husband of Princess Margaret, has died peacefully at the age of 86 a family spokesperson has announced.

Born Antony Armstrong-Jones, he was a slightly bohemian member of London's smart set and an established society photographer when he and the queen's sister surprised the country with their engagement in February 1960.

From then on, he was known by the titles the Earl of Snowdon and Viscount Linley.

Buckingham Palace acknowledged that the Queen received news of her former brother-in-law's death, but they did not comment further.

But the professional photographer - whose full name is Antony Charles Robert Armstrong-Jones - spent almost two decades at the heart of the Royal Family.

He is also survived by Polly Fry, a daughter he fathered before his marriage to Princess Margaret.

He married his second wife, Lucy Lindsay-Hogg, in 1978, before splitting in 2000.

The motorbike-riding celebrity photographer also made headlines throughout the years - often for controversial reasons.

Despite his photographic career which spanned over six decades, Lord Snowdon is perhaps most well-known for his marriage to the Queen's sister, Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon.

They married at Westminster Abbey on May 6, 1960, with Princess Anne as a bridesmaid and Prince Philip escorting the bride down the aisle.

The Snowdon Trust, the charity that gives grants to disabled students founded by Snowdon in 1981, said its thoughts were with his family.
