Donald Trump is rekindling one of his favorite conspiracy theories: vaccine safety
Jan 11, 2017, 00:17
On Tuesday, President-elect Donald Trump appointed Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. - an outspoken vaccine skeptic who believes the widely debunked theory that vaccines cause autism - to chair a commission on vaccine safety.
Kennedy met with Trump at Trump Tower in NY on Tuesday and afterward told reporters that he had accepted an offer to lead a panel on "vaccine safety and scientific integrity".
Trump has a history, on Twitter and in debates, of questioning the well-established science behind the US' vaccination program.
"President-elect Trump has some doubts about the current vaccine policies and he has questions about it", Kennedy told reporters.
"People that work for me, just the other day, two years old, attractive child went to have the vaccine and came back and a week later, got a tremendous fever, got very, very sick, now is autistic", Trump said in September 2015.
In another 2014 tweet, he wrote: 'Lots of autism and vaccine response. "This is a holocaust, what this is doing to our country". "Just the other day, two years old, two-and-a-half years old, a child, a lovely child went to have the vaccine, and came back, and a week later got a tremendous fever, got very, very sick, now is autistic"'.
Kennedy Jr., son of Bobby Kennedy, said he agreed to lead the commission, which will seek to ensure there is "scientific integrity in the vaccine process for efficacy and safety ets", Kennedy said. In 1998, the Lancet published a study which claimed autism was linked to the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Wakefield helped establish fears of a vaccine-autism connection by publishing a paper, now retracted, that suggested a connection between the two. "[We] would like to correct false statements made during the Republican presidential debate...regarding vaccines".
I'm not against vaccinations for your children, I'm against them in 1 massive dose.Spread them out over a period of time & autism will drop! "It is risky to public health to suggest otherwise".
Trump's position on vaccines was not a huge part of his campaign - perhaps owing in part to the fact that the issue was discussed at a time when it still wasn't clear how formidable Trump would eventually become.
"There is no "alternative" immunization schedule".
