Michael Keaton reveals he turned down Batman Forever because

"When [Schumacher] said, 'Why does everything have to be so dark?'"

On The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter Podcast, when asked what prompted his exit from the project, the Spider-Man: Homecoming villain sugarcoated nothing. However, Keaton declined. "The script never was great", he said.

However it was Tim Burton's dark and adult Batman in 1989, followed by 1992's Batman Returns, when we were introduced to the brooding Dark Knight fans are familiar with today. "I couldn't understand why [director Joel Schumacher] wanted to do what he wanted to do".

Affleck is also down to direct and star in a stand-alone movie, The Batman, but, like Keaton before him, he's having second thoughts about portraying the comic book hero again.

Keaton said he went through "many meetings" before finally departing the film franchise.

The actor, who was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Birdman in 2014, has reflected on this particular career decision in a new interview, revealing the reason why he didn't choose to play Batman for a third time.

Michael Keaton is opening up a bit more about why he turned down the opportunity to reprise his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne in Batman Forever - and he doesn't mince his words.

Batman Forever's Caped Crusader was played by Val Kilmer; he was replaced by George Clooney in 1997's Batman and Robin.

Last year, Ben Affleck took over Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, only to be met with bad reviews.
