Vietnamese doctors recover forgotten scissors from abdomen after 18 years

The 54-year-old Ma Van Nhat recently complained of a stomachache, prompting the doctors to do an ultrasound and discover the 15-centimeter (six-inch) scissors, Vietnam medical officials said on Tuesday.

He has only recently discovered that doctors left the scissors behind when they closed him up, and the implement was finally removed in an operation this weekend.

Ma Van Nhat, 54, had undergone an operation following a auto accident in 1998, according to the Daily Mail.

An operation to remove them took about three hours.

The scissors must have been left on his stomach when he had surgery at Bac Kan General Hospital way back in June 1998 after another road accident, Tuoi Tre Newspaper reports. Still suffering with occasional abdominal pain, Nhat underwent an X-ray and this revealed that he was carrying surgical forceps.

A pair of surgical scissors have been removed after they were left in a man's abdomen for 18 years. The presiding surgeons noted that the rusty handles had become stuck to Nhat's organs, according to the BBC. This is being led by Trinh Thi Luong, who is the director of the Bac Kan Hospital (which undertook the recent operation).

Mr Ma has been battling with pain for nearly two decades but was freed of his cramps in December when doctors removed the sharp instrument from his abdomen.

Medical errors are not uncommon in Vietnam.
