Australia make shock changes to Sydney Test XI

Jan 04, 2017, 00:22

Three legendary Aussies from a bygone age - Victor Trumper, Charles Macartney and Sir Donald Bradman - had previously achieved the feat.

Apart from the four Australians, the only other batsman to make a hundred before lunch on the first day of a Test is Majid Khan, the Pakistani who slammed 108 against New Zealand in Karachi in 1976.

It is the first time it has been achieved on Australian soil.

Warne's commentary that O'Keefe is better suited to white-ball cricket is not backed up by the figures, with the 32-year-old thriving in recent seasons to compile a first-class record of 218 wickets at 23.64.

There are seemingly lots of trivial statistics in cricket, a sport consumed by numbers, but Warner's electric century before lunch was simply astonishing.

Left-arm spinner Agar, 23, is on track to play for the first time since his only two Tests on the 2013 Ashes tour of England, where he scored 98 on debut at Trent Bridge batting at No. 11.

Because of his innate destructiveness, Warner - along with his hero Virender Sehwag, who coincidentally once scored 99 in an opening session of a Test - always seemed capable of doing what no batsman could for the last four decades.

Renshaw stuck to his natural game as Warner blasted his way to a 78 ball hundred and at times came in for some stick from the crowd but his partner was thrilled with his showing. "It was about going out there with intent and batting positive". "It's great to be out there with those guys".

Warner took two from the first ball of the next over, off Wahab Riaz, and then pushed the next delivery through point, where a misfield allowed Renshaw to call him back for the third run that took Warner to exactly 100.

Khan was smashed for 44 runs in his first seven-over spell but should have had a wicket in his second dig when Khawaja, on three, hit the ball towards Babar Azam in the gully but the fielder was unable to hold on to it.

Warner hammered Pakistan through the off side.

Renshaw has also clearly been on the receiving end of some good-natured teasing from the senior test players.

Warner said he was not aware of the select company he had joined until he was told by team doctor Peter Brukner during the break.

In direct contrast to Warner's strokeful century, Renshaw provided the steady foil, needing almost five hours to bring up a measured maiden Test ton.
