UN Security Council rejects anti-Pakistan bid by India

The reaction from Delhi came hours after China blocked India's plea in the United Nations to list Azhar Masood as a terrorist.

China has placed a "permanent block" on the current Indian move in the United Nations to designate terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar as terrorist, after which India lashed out, terming it "an unfortunate blow to the concerted efforts to effectively counter all forms of terrorism, and (which) confirms prevalence of double standards in the fight against terrorism".

Unfazed by Beijing's repeated blocks, India, however, said that it will continue to push forward with resolute determination "through the use of all options available to bring perpetrators of terrorist violence to justice".

Decision by China to block proposal to list Masood Azhar as terrorist is surprising as China herself is affected by scourge of terrorism.

Beijing, meanwhile, justified its move saying there was no consensus on the issue in the UN counter-terrorism committee."The UN Security Council 1267 Committee (on listing terrorist organisations and leaders) is an important anti- terrorism organisation within the UN framework", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told PTI after Beijing blocked India's proposal to list JeM chief Azhar as a designated terrorist by the UN. In the coming days, Pakistan will share with the United Nations and members of the global community additional evidence of Indian involvement in terrorism in Pakistan, he added. A senior official in the home ministry said "this shows that we are not going to step back from our fight against terror and exposing Pakistan for supporting risky terrorists like Azhar, even though China has repeatedly vetoed our move and it has now become a contentious issue".

Although PM Modi paid a "surprise" visit to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on his birthday at the end of 2015 ─ a move that appeared to promise better relations between the neighbouring countries in the coming year ─ Pak-India ties in 2016 started off on a shaky note after the Pathankot siege which India blamed on Jaish-i-Mohammad.

China reportedly put a three-month technical hold on India's case against Azhar initially, extending that hold for 3 more months in October.

If the 48-year-old was blacklisted by the UN Security Council, he would face a global travel ban and asset freeze. India is likely to continue its efforts to persuade China, sources said.
