Robert Mathis says Colts' finale will be his last National Football League game

"We battled a lot, the last five years or so it's been a good two-sided battle where I got him a lot, he got me sometimes, no trash talking just complete battles every time".

"I want to walk away, not limp away", Mathis said.

His successful transition and the Colts' tough decision to retain Mathis but not Freeney as the cornerstone of their new defensive scheme is a testament to his famous work ethic and leadership skills, not to mention special football ability and adaptability. Mathis is the Colts' all-time leader in sacks with 122, and he's the NFL's all-time leader in strip-sacks with 46 (he's recorded 51 forced fumbles total).

Although he didn't officially announce his retirement, Indianapolis Colts defensive end Robert Mathis took time Friday to record and post an Instagram video where he thanked the fans for his time with the organization and community. "The rest of my body goes to my kids". "I want to go out a victor". "Stomp with the big dogs basically".

Mathis missed the 2014 season after suffering an Achilles tendon injury.

However, even as a "solo act" as a converted stand-up 3-4 outside linebacker in 2013-with Freeney departed, Mathis led the league with 19.5 sacks in 2013 in what was arguably his best NFL season. He'd tally 11 combined sacks from 2015-16 during the Colts' first two-year playoff drought of his career. But Mathis returned last season to play in all but one of the Colts' games, recording seven sacks.

Mathis told his teammates after Friday's practice that he was retiring. When he plays this Sunday, he'll tie Justin Snow for the seventh-most games with the Colts in franchise history (with 192).
